Amy Klobuchar’s Early Life and Law Degree
Born on May 25, 1960, in Plymouth, Minnesota, Klobuchar grew up in a household shaped by public writing: her father, Jim Klobuchar, worked as a longtime columnist for the Star Tribune, and her mother taught elementary school. She graduated as valedictorian of her class at Wayzata High School.
Klobuchar earned her B.A. in political science from Yale University, graduating magna cum laude in 1982. While there, she wrote a senior thesis called “Uncovering the Dome,” which examined the political fight over building the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis. She later expanded it into a published book in 1986.
She went on to earn her law degree from the University of Chicago Law School in 1985. After graduation, she worked as a legal adviser to former Vice President Walter Mondale, who encouraged her to pursue a career in politics.
From Hennepin County Attorney to United States Senator
Klobuchar married attorney John Bessler in 1993. The couple’s daughter, Abigail Klobuchar Bessler, was born in 1995. That experience shaped Klobuchar’s early policy work, since insurance rules at the time forced her out of the hospital just 24 hours after giving birth. She later pushed for and helped pass a Minnesota law guaranteeing longer postpartum hospital stays.
In 1998, Klobuchar became the first woman elected Hennepin County Attorney, a role covering Minneapolis and the surrounding area. She served from 1999 to 2006 and focused heavily on prosecuting violent crime, drunk driving, and cases involving child protection.
Klobuchar won her Senate race in 2006 with 58 percent of the vote, becoming the first woman to represent Minnesota in the United States Senate. Voters reelected her in 2012, 2018, and again in 2024, when she defeated Republican challenger Royce White by roughly 16 points. She has chaired the Senate Rules and Administration Committee since 2021.
Her 2020 Presidential Run and Governor Bid Today
Klobuchar entered the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination race and built her campaign around a moderate, bipartisan message. She withdrew before Super Tuesday and endorsed Joe Biden, a move that helped consolidate support behind him ahead of the general election.
In January 2026, Klobuchar announced she was running for governor of Minnesota after Governor Tim Walz ended his bid for a third term. Her campaign launch came during a period of intense state and national attention on immigration enforcement actions in Minnesota. If she wins the governor’s race, she would resign her Senate seat, and the sitting governor would appoint a temporary replacement until a special election.
What Amy Klobuchar’s Financial Disclosures Actually Show
Members of Congress do not report exact net worth figures. Instead, they file annual disclosures listing assets and liabilities within broad value ranges, which makes any net worth number an estimate rather than an audited total.
Klobuchar’s 2023 financial disclosure placed her total assets and liabilities somewhere between $471,000 and $2.615 million. OpenSecrets, a nonpartisan group that tracks congressional finances, estimated her net worth at roughly $1.32 million back in 2017. Forbes reported the Klobuchar and Bessler household’s combined worth at around $2 million in 2019.
Quiver Quantitative’s tracking placed her net worth near $2.3 million as of August 2025, and other trackers combining Quiver and OpenSecrets data estimate a broader $2.1 million to $2.3 million range. Some lower quality aggregator sites list figures as high as $10 million. Those numbers aren’t backed by her actual disclosure filings and deserve real skepticism.
How Amy Klobuchar’s Senate Salary and Book Royalties Add Up
Klobuchar’s core income source is straightforward: her Senate salary of $174,000 a year, the standard pay for rank and file senators. That salary has stayed flat for years, since Congress has repeatedly voted against raising its own base pay.
Beyond her salary, Klobuchar earns royalties from her books. Her 2015 memoir, “The Senator Next Door: A Memoir from the Heartland,” generated meaningful income in its release year. The 2021 follow-up, “Antitrust: Taking on Monopoly Power from the Gilded Age to the Digital Age,” became a New York Times bestseller and won the Association of American Publishers’ Award for Distinguished Public Service.
John Bessler, her husband, adds a second income stream to the household. He works as a law professor at the University of Baltimore School of Law and serves as an adjunct professor at Georgetown University Law Center, alongside his work as an attorney. The bulk of the couple’s remaining net worth sits in retirement accounts and mutual funds, including holdings tied to TIAA-CREF and State Street index funds, rather than in individual stock picks.

Where Klobuchar Stands Among Fellow Senators
Compared with many of her Senate colleagues, Klobuchar’s net worth sits on the modest side. Congress includes dozens of members worth tens of millions of dollars, often through business ownership, inherited wealth, or spouses in high paying private sector careers.
Klobuchar’s finances instead reflect a career built almost entirely on public sector salaries and legal work, plus book deals tied directly to her political career. That puts her closer to the middle or lower end of Senate wealth rankings rather than among its wealthiest members.
Is Amy Klobuchar a Millionaire?
Yes. Even the low end of her 2023 disclosure range, $471,000, sits below the million dollar mark, but most independent estimates, including OpenSecrets and Quiver Quantitative data, place her total assets above $1 million. That makes her a millionaire by most reasonable readings of her public filings, though not among the wealthiest members of Congress.
Amy Klobuchar’s Financial Picture Heading Into the Governor’s Race
A net worth in the low seven figures tells a fairly ordinary financial story for a career public servant. Her wealth grew slowly through decades of Senate pay, legal work, and a couple of well-received books rather than through business deals or windfalls.
As she campaigns for Minnesota governor, her financial disclosures will likely draw renewed attention from voters and reporters alike. Based on her filing history, expect any updated figures to stay within a similar range rather than show a dramatic jump.
Editorial Note
Net worth figures for public officials come from congressional financial disclosures, which report asset values within ranges rather than exact dollar amounts. This article draws its estimates from those public filings and from independent research by OpenSecrets and Quiver Quantitative. Figures may change as new disclosures are filed, and this article will be updated when reliable new information becomes available.
